About Ranscombe House

Our History

Ranscombe House was built around 1750 for a Sea Captain. It has also been a private home for several families in its long history, originally being built for its views over Torbay and its location so close to the harbour. Over the years it has served as a hotel, B&B and also let as family holiday accommodation.

What's nearby?

Ranscombe House is located in Brixham, Devon. We are a five-minute walk from Brixham beach and harbour. The area is rich with a variety of shops, pubs, cocktail bars, coffee houses and restaurants, all within walking distance. Brixham also has a number of museums and a lovely theatre, which make a great visit all year round.

Berry Head National Nature Reserve and South West Coast Path make the area a nature-lover's dream. Also, the nearby Breakwater Beach, one of the English Riviera's cleanest beaches, is well worth a visit.

The nearby area of Torquay is a hive of activity throughout the year with many beaches from Kent's Cavern to the Living Coasts that give you a chance to walk with the penguins. This, as well as plenty of sightseeing excursions, boat and fishing trips out into the bay or the close proximity to Dartmouth or the wonderful zoo at Paignton, make the ideal place for a family or group holiday.

Why not make the most of some of the other water activities that Brixham has to offer? Scuba diving, jet skiing, kayaking, paddle boarding and even sailing lessons are all available within walking distance of Ranscombe House.

Alternatively, within a short drive, other day trips can include golf, at one of four local golf courses, pitch & putt, go-karting, a steam railway, Splashdown Water Park, 10 pin bowling & Velo Park. Churston House is also worth a trip, and there are a number of theatres and museums in Torquay and Paignton.

Local Events

The surrounding town of Brixham also has a lot of family oriented events going on throughout the year, including the Pirate Festival- a nod to the history of Torbay. The Golden Hind Museum Ship docked at The Quay is another destination that's ideal for any family traveling with younger children.

For a quieter trip out you might also want to visit the model village at Babbacombe and Agatha Christie's summer residence, Greenway.

About The Owner

Before my work in the area of hospitality I ran a successful interior design company. During this time I was also a Partner in a busy 45 seater restaurant/pub in Reading.

In 1997 I moved to Devon and renovated an old farmhouse to a very high standard which was subsequently used for family holiday rentals.

My next project was building a successful wedding and conference venue business at Muddiford Court in Cullompton. A superior Bed and Breakfast featuring on Channel 4's 'Four in a Bed' and ultimately winning the series.

Following a programme of works to completely renovate Ranscombe House in Brixham into a superior Bed and Breakfast, I now want to concentrate on welcoming guests to join me in this prime location near to Brixham Harbour.
